Yesterday, I finally got to eat “American” goulash. This is it… I now have photographic evidence of what this foreign (to me) dish actually looks like… See pics. And, briefly allow me to add this – once you dish it out into your plate, you should also add – grated/shredded cheese. I forgot to take pictures of the grated cheese.
Nevertheless, behold… “American” goulash!
“American” goulash – The food that became a nation-wide sensation in Zimbabwe’s golden years, after a TV + radio drama character (Mukadota) came back from America. And, claimed to NO LONGER enjoy sadza (a widely eating “Zimbabwean” corn meal pap).
Those who know, know why I put – “Zimbabwean” in quotes, when talking about maize-based sadza. The rest.. just keep on reading… Nothing to see here…
I know that here, they don’t call it “American” goulash. It’s just goulash to them.. but as for me and my family, we shall continue to pay homage to Mukadota’s legacy! Anyone who wasn’t there at that time, does NOT know the impact and nation-wide curiosity that was created by “American” goulash, with yesteryear Zimbabwe. And yet… NOBODY knew how to cook this mysterious dish.
So, hilariously (yet also ironically) the name becasame synonymous with ANY fancy cooking or dish, which people weren’t familiar with. That dish (once cooked) would have people/cooks telling you – it’s American goulash.
In the aforementioned comedic “drama” (the word drama means something different in Zimbabwe.. it’s almost the same as – theatre, or roadshows, or sometimes.. it’s almost like a telenovela, or soapie) but I digress.. in the “drama show” Mukudota alleged to have left his wife and family behind, and gone to America. Where he discovered modern/better cuisine. With his favorite dish being – “American” goulash.
And yesterday, I finally got to eat “American” goulash, made in a American kitchen.
My sister in law laughed when I told her about the Mukadota story. Because “goulash” isn’t really as big and fancy, as Mukadota made us believe. Which (to me) makes his drama even MORE funny! Probably by design, since Mukadota could be a bit of a con (sometimes).
I don’t remember this show enough to accurately talk more, because I was very very very young when it was still on air.. but, nevertheless.. I thank God, Jehovah, my Lord and Savior, for all that he continues to give me and show me. Thank you for reading this blog entry, and don’t forget to read our other articles here.
